“Not About” Unprotection.

Unprotected.
Utterly

unprotected.

Unguarded.

Exposed.

Tethered to the underpinning
of categorical denials,
dreams of utopia,
distance.
These (dreams of yours)
do not help me.

I am uncovered. And

it doesn’t matter how many degrees I get
or how well I speak

I will still be uncovered.

We are the spoils of this neverending internal war of yours.
Believe it or not,
this has nothing to do with us.
We didn’t
strike fear in your hearts and inspire you to create laws that perpetually unclothe us.

We didn’t do that.
And to suggest
To suggest that somehow
we played a role in being naked
and afraid is not only
abhorrently
disrespectful,

it is ahistorical.
The pages you chose to fashion into books did more than cripple that self-
assessment chamber in our
brains
it disrobed us.

You like us unclothed, though.
It makes sense to you.
You
couldn’t be you if
we were
armored,
locked and loaded
at the ready
fighting stance
onguard
perpetually
on watch.

You don’t want shit to change
That’s why you can profess, with the confidence of an
indefatigable infantry
that you think this was due to “mental illness” or that “you support this community”
and advise the
black people in town not to hurt anyone.
